Experts Agree: 3rd Annual Bilingual International Trivia Night Is Best Yet

November 7, 2019 By Jason Baker

On Saturday, November 2nd, at the Webster Groves Masonic Temple, Bilingual International hosted our Third Annual Trivia Night. Our Executive Director, Jason Baker, Marketing Coordinator VISTA, Leah Star, and Board of Directors worked together to plan this sold-out evening of entertainment. Refugee Services Team Lead Ron Klutho created the internationally themed trivia rounds, the worst of which being an audio round where our mission statement was read in 10 different languages for the teams to try to recognize! Aside from that one audio round and a brief parking-related request from the Webster Groves Police Department, the evening was filled with laughter and good times as we raised funds for the crucial services we provide to foreign-born individuals across Missouri.

We had a number of different donors and sponsors that helped make this event possible. Trivia Rounds were generously sponsored by our friends at 4U Realty, Oliver C. Joseph, Inc. and the Lakey Family, and delicious complimentary beer was provided for guests by Urban Chestnut Brewing Company. Auction items were graciously donated by Waterway, the St. Louis Cardinals, Mai Lee, Robata, Nami Ramen, Mango Peruvian Cuisine, Schlafly Tap Room, Funny Bone Comedy Club, Wildwood Pub & Grill, Papa Murphy’s, Lazy River Grill, Philly Pretzel Factory, Cheesecake Factory, Marcus Theatres, Urban Breath Yoga, PRP Wine,  Kaldi’s Coffee, the Royale, Heffernan Vineyards, AMP UP Action Park, Bulrush, Hotel Ignacio, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, Heinrichshaus Wine, and the St. Louis Blues. These organizations provided gift certificates, vouchers, and other items that our guests had opportunities to bid on, and win! Thank you to all these organizations and the individuals who coordinated the donations.

We are especially grateful for all the family, friends, and supporters who participated this year as attendees and volunteers! A special shoutout to key volunteers Katie Mannebach, Frantz Lindor, Max Bressler, Bob Foster, Claire VanEssendelft, Susan Marting, and all of the conscripted family members of the staff and Board for helping with the event!

Thank you all for coming and we hope to see you again next year!

Mary's story is one of remarkable resilience, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch piece highlights that. What it maybe doesn't adequately do is acknowledge the dense network of nonprofits, community groups, churches, and volunteers that help refugee survivors of war trauma adapt and thrive in our community. St. Louis is blessed with an embarrassment of riches in the do-gooder department, and a shout-out to our own volunteer extraordinaire, Melissa Elliott, for her efforts on Mary's behalf over the years. ...
