Bilingual International was proud to welcome frontline refugee service professionals from Egypt through the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) facilitated by the World Affairs Council of St. Louis on September 23, 2019.  The visitors represented a range of NGOs operating in Egypt dealing with multiple waves of migrant and refugee arrivals.  The visitors met with Refugee Services Team Lead Ron Klutho, Therapist Joanna Mikhail, and Executive Director Jason Baker for a morning session focusing on mental health work with highly traumatized refugee populations.  Despite the differing circumstances and structural supports available in both countries, many of the issues faced by clinicians were germane to workers from both Egypt and the U.S.  The conversation quickly turned to an exchange of best practices and strategies for dealing with mutual challenges to sustained work in this space including interpretation, professional boundaries, working cross-culturally, provider burnout, and defining and assessing success in services.  Bilingual International is grateful to the World Affairs Council for arranging this meeting with international colleagues and facilitating a unique opportunity for provider exchange.
