In recognition of the United Nations Day in Support of Victims of Torture and in collaboration with the Missouri Historical Society and the Refugee Congress, Bilingual International is proud to present Washington, D.C. area psychiatrist and author Dr. Jamal Fawaz. Dr. Fawaz will discuss the innate human need to fit in, to belong, to find a “base” – specifically, the challenges for immigrants and refugees to find this base in the United States after 9/11. For younger Muslim immigrants and refugees “in search of a base,” this journey can be especially daunting. When an individual is forced to abandon everything in the face of violence, war, and/or torture, the struggle to find one’s footing in a new environment has the potential to yield less than positive results.

Dr. Fawaz will offer insights based on his work on how to create a welcoming “base” for those who have suffered greatly.
