Housing Needs of Immigrants, Refugees and Large Families

September 5, 2014 By Jason Baker

The St. Louis Civil Rights Enforcement Agency hosted their first conference in September, 2014. The conference focused on the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” proposed rule which will undoubtedly change the way communities actualize fair housing.

Conference panelist were a blend of knowledgeable and seasoned professionals who discussed fair housing obstacles in the areas of transportation, disability issues, senior accommodations and housing for immigrants and refugee populations. As a city and region, it is clear that a concerted and informed effort must be made to address the fair housing needs of all our residents.

The conference concludes with a review of funding resource information from federal, state and local agencies addressing the application process, deadlines and how much may be available.

September 5, 2014 – Sheraton St. Louis City Center

Panelists:
Ariel Burgess – Vice President/Director of Client Services (International Institute of St. Louis)
Ron Klutho – Coordinator of the Refugee/Immigrant Program (Places for People)
Julia Ostropolsky – President/Chief Operating Officer (Bilingual International Assistant Services)

The United Way of Greater St. Louis Safety Net of local nonprofit agencies helps one out of every three residents in our region. THAT'S A LOT OF PEOPLE, and it includes many of us on staff here at Bilingual International. Which is part of the reason why we are proud to host - for the second year now - an admittedly modest employee contribution campaign to support the same Safety Net that funds our work.
